Moving Serum Presets to External Hard Drive (Mac)

Started by mmarauders

I have Serum for Mac and I am using it within Logic. My preset library is growing daily and I want to move the default preset folder to my external hard drive instead of storing it locally on my machine as I am constantly running out of space. The presets themselves are obviously quite small but the wavetables that accompany them can be large so it's much easier for me to just have everything together on an external drive. Is there a way to change the default folder so that Serum knows where to look ? Thanks !

I second that. Hoping to hear how to do this without messing everything up in Serum.

You can move the Serum Presets folder and Serum will ask for the new location next run.

To be clear, the 'Serum Presets' folder, which by default is installed to the 'Library/Audio/Presets/Xfer Records/' folder contains the following sub-folders:

Effect Chains
LFO Shapes
Noises
Presets
System
Tables

…and the Serum user manual ('Serum_Manual.pdf').

Moving and preserving this folder hierarchy (i.e., moving the installed 'Serum Presets' folder in tact) to an external hard drive is sufficient to run Serum as before once one informs Serum to locate the moved 'Serum Preset's folder after re-running the Serum plug-in.

Just out of curiosity, I created an 'alias' of the external drive 'Serum Presets' folder in the default installed 'Serum Preset's location  and then pointed Serum to it as an indirect reference the externally stored 'Serum Presets' folder. Basically, I wanted to delete the original 'Serum Presets' folder on my internal hard drive but maintain a reference to the external drive location instead.

Is this an acceptable practice that future Serum versions supports?

Thank you.

An alias is not the right way to do it. You can just delete the original, it will ask for the location next run, select the folder on the external drive .

Hi, Steve.

I followed your instructions to move the Serum Presets folder. It doesn't take. After I point to the new location, Serum's pop-up window just re-opens asking for the Presets folder location. Please, help.

Thanks!

Is the location a plain-text path? There could be something about the directory throwing it off. It could be permissions related. In any case of course Serum shouldn't ask again, it wasn't able to find a valid Presets folder selected, esseentially.. I'd recommend to contact me using the contact form as this might get in to personal info (directory names etc). Please mention your OS and ideally the path.

I don't remember where if I did report my results. I will here & now, since I know I meant to and just stumbled across this post. I simply reinstalled Serum on my iMac - 10.11.6. I think reinstallation is the key for most issues I've run into. It got hung up when I moved the folder. Serum wouldn't recognize my selection until I reinstalled it. Then, The Duda's advice worked like a charm. I now house the entire 'Serum Presets' folder on my external drive.

Open Format

Just moved the entire Serum Presets folder to my 'Soundbanks' SSHD drive but when I load up Serum in cubase 9.5(Windows 10) it shows up all white, no controlls what so ever.
I'm kind of confused if I'm getting this correctly…should I only move the presets folder INSIDE the Serum Presets folder or (like I allready did) the entire folder?

Thanks,

Patrick

This is not a support forum - please use/see the Serum registered forum, I don't see you registered for Serum, if you need support please use the contact form if you need help locating your purchase.

YES!!! Thank you! You made it so easy and I was overthinking it.
