Serum crashing while trying to load 2nd preset: SOLVED

Started by Deleted user Edit Topic

This was easy but initially annoying.

Problem: New Serum install in Windows 10 64 bit.  In any host/DAW, Serum launched fine. First preset chosen played as expected. BUT try to choose another preset,  and Serum would crash and bring the host/DAW down too. In Maschine, Maschine hangs and error message says "Maschine 2 has stopped working."  Not possible to exit  without stopping the Maschine process with Task Manager.

Solution: Tried this and it worked.  Delete the preset database file: "C:\Users\ * \AppData\Roaming\Xfer\Serumpresetdb.dat" You need to allow Windows to display hidden folders to see AppData folder.
For whatever reason, preset database was corrupted. Now Serum works great.
I wanted to post this because I hadn't seen it my search of the forums.

Cheers for posting this Vern.

I came on here as I was having the exact same issue.
However I delete my Serumpresetdb.dat file and Serum still crashes when switching to the 2nd  preset.
It also crashes Ableton (as you mentioned your DAW would crash also).

Is it definitely working for you?
Before I tried your fix I had crashed Ableton countless times and during a few of these times Serum would change presets ok. But it was temporary and it eventually crashed.

Windows 10 64bit (latest update as of 2ndAug)
Ableton 9.6.2

During one of my crashes I got an error code: "Error -538  please contact [email protected]"

Steve…. Do you have any ideas?

Thanks

Its been great all morning and last night. Very stable. Previously, it brought down Maschine, Ableton, Savihost, pretty much everything i tried. The only change I made was deleting that file.  Sorry I dont have more to offer.

Sidestalker-splice, please try going to C:\%APPDATA%\Xfer
delete the Serum folder.

Heya Steve,

Thanks for replying.

I deleted the entire folder but as soon as the folder/database is recreated Serum crashes and takes Ableton down with it still.
I've tried reinstalling and everything but to no avail.

My system is quite clean and the only thing I have installed that I would consider a bit different is the brand new Windows 10 Anniversary update. Wasn't sure if that could be a source of the problem?

Any further ideas?

Cheers.

I just tried Serum on my Mac and the same problem exists. Serum crashes while changing presets and takes Ableton down with it. It is not as extreme as on PC and only crashes after 4 - 8 preset changes on average.

I am a new Splice user so maybe it could be a Splice issue?

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

I get the same annoying crashes when changing preset :(. It just closes down my entire Studio One, really annoying :(. Any fix on this? I'm on mac.

Hi
i got the same problem, i tested Serum (rent to own)  on Ableton 32 and 64bit, the problem is the same. Delete the Serum folder in AppData , Ableton crash …
i hope it's going to be fixed

This is a Splice lease-specific issue which seems to stem from having Serum previously installed on the computer.

First, here's boilerplate message from Splice (and me I guess now!):

Please make sure you have deleted any previous versions of Serum you have on your computer. Then confirm that you are signed into the Splice app (the Splice logo will appear in your menubar) and have the latest version of the Splice client installed. The current version for OSX is 2.1, and for Windows it's 1.2.15. If you need to download the Splice app, you can do so here: splice.com/download

If you need to re-install Serum, open the client and navigate to the 'Plugins' Tab and click 'Reinstall'

You can also download the Serum installer here: https://splice.com/plugins/install/serum

and if problems persist

1)
command-shift-G and type or paste paste:
~/Library/Application Support/com.xferrecords.serum
delete User.dat

2)
command-shift-G in Finder
/Library/Audio/Presets/Xfer Records/Serum Presets/System/

right-click (ctrl-click) User.dat -> open with .. (other) TextEdit

select all text, delete, type something short e.g. ABCD, save

Serum should ask for you SN# next run.  Be sure to enter the serial number in "your account" on the website.

Warm regards,
Steve

Problem still remains for me. I've followed the most recent steps, however, I'm not getting prompted to enter a SN# upon loading the plugin. Hmm…

EDIT: Okay, I got it working again. Hopefully for good this time. What I did was went to the folder you pointed us to, %APPDATA%/xfer/ , deleted both the Serumpresetdb.dat file and the Serum folder, opened Ableton and Serum and let the library rebuild itself and then I believe this was key (for me at least) went to Menu > Rescan folders on disk. I've been cycling through presets ever since. Hope this helps guys!!

Did everything in the thread nothing works actually it crashes on the first preset that i select.

please email me with your DAW and OS informatoin if you're still stuck.  I'll have to make you go through similar steps most likely to ensure everything is freshly installed, as this stuff tends to be relating to having some old version of Serum installed:  [email protected]

Still having problems myself… I think I've fixed them, only to find out I've spoken too soon. Spent the day doing a fresh install of Windows 8.1, downloaded Splice and then downloaded and installed Serum build 1.109. I have done everything I have read on the forums and I've dug around other websites to no avail. Specs - Windows 8.1 64 bit, Ableton 9.5 64 bit, i7-6700k, 16gb ram, Serum build 1.109. I don't know what else to do but hopefully wait for a patch that'll fix my problem.

Give me 24 hours (traveling today), there should be a 1.11 available

scorpiano-splice

Hey there!
Sorry for not bringing something new or useful, but I just wanna say that I have the same issue and I contacted the guys on Splice and they already emailed me back with some questions, I answered back and now waiting.
I hope I can bring some useful news right here in short time.
I'm on Win 10 Home Anniversary with Cubase 8.5.
I've tried to test Serum with SAVIHost, but it crashes, too, after trying to switch to a new preset.
Thanks Steve for your help and thanks to all of you here on this page trying to solve the problem!

Update: Still working for me. Not having any problems and its been 4 days.

STEVE!! Thank you so much!! She's running like a dream! I feel like a kid on Christmas! I tried to recreate multiple instances that were giving me trouble in the past with no luck (no luck can be good sometimes, right?) Anyways, thought I'd let you know all is well on my end! Thank you so much!!

Glad it is working with the update - it will be rolled out on Splice directly in 12 hours or so most likely.  Thanks for your positivity!

Also got the FX download on my account here now.

Thanks for the fast fix! <3

Working great the new update 1.112 to my end, too! Smooth as a Serum Pad preset.
Thank you very much, Steve, for your great work!
You have my whole respect for how you treat us, the customers.
Have a happy life fulfilled with musical inspiration guys!

The version release Aug 9th seems to have cleared up the issue once and for all.
