What does xfer mean?

In the business world Xfer means transfer, but what does the program name Xfer mean? What does the X take the place of in this case?

Means transfer, it was a much too subtle play on the word records (xfer records in  a database).  

Thank you for revealing that, it was bothering me. I thought it must mean something else because it was not evident to me how the name applied to the nature of the program as I saw it. I appreciate the explanation.

I feel I should mention as side note that Serum is miles beyond its contemporaries. I got sick of wasting time and money on lifeless uninspiring soft synths. Serum is in a class of its own.

I always thought it was a joke about the nexus/vengeance company, xfer being the reverse of refx.
